Standard TF-V

Standard TF-V. Productivity and Professional Practice.  Educational technology facilitators apply technology to enhance and improve personal productivity and professional practice.

A. Use technology resources to engage in ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.

For several years I have used resources and professional development activities available through my membership in The Maryland Society for Educational Technology (MSET).  I attend the MSET convention in Baltimore each spring to support my ongoing professional growth related to technology.  Below is a link to a copy of my profile page on the MSET site, with years of membership listed at the bottom.

As part of my internship, I created a staff wiki to identify resources and opportunities for professional development.  Included in the wiki, I create and share links that give teachers information on how to access online training videos/tutorials that will be of particular importance for them.

I disseminate information received from Anne Arundel County's Office of Instructional Technology for professional growth opportunities—from workshops to credited courses.  I share this information with teachers via email and also by hanging a hard copy next to the teacher sign-in sheets.

 B. Continually evaluate and reflect on professional practice to make informed decisions regarding the use of technology in support of student learning.

In order to evaluate and reflect on the effective use of technology that supports student learning, I have read research about some of the technologies we offer in our school.  On the staff wiki, in order to encourage use of the Lightspeed Audio technology installed in each room, I shared research about how this technology improves and supports student learning.  I also shared an action research report about how interactive whiteboards affect student engagement.  (See Lightspeed and SmartBoard pages on the staff wiki.)

Membership in MSET, as listed above, helps me continually evaluate my professional practice.  Attendance at the yearly convention helps me make informed decisions about technology and student learning and allows me to share that information with the staff and administration.

C. Apply technology to increase productivity.

The staff wiki allowed me to show teachers a wide variety of ways to increase productivity, and artifacts for this standard can be found on the staff wiki.  Using a wiki has been an effective tool to communicate concepts and research with the staff.  Since the wiki is accessible from any location with a Internet connection, teachers were afforded the advantage of a form of distance learning on their own schedules. To increase productivity, I modeled advanced features of Notebook Software at staff in-services/meetings that would allow teachers to take capture digital images, or screenshots, of anything online or on the document camera.  Those screenshots are instantly inserted into a Notebook file.  You can then use the image in your Notebook file, or copy and paste it into the Microsoft Suite of products (interoperability between professional products).  A quick reference link is included on the SmartBoard page of the wiki.  The Smart Response page demonstrates the use of the Smart Reponse system, which is a specific-purpose electronic device.  The staff wiki is a form of distance learning, as teachers can learn about various technologies on their own schedules.

A fellow AACPS Cohort and myself were chosen to conduct a session at the spring eCoach day.  We modeled how various Web 2.0 technologies could be used to integrate various technologies (word processing, graphics, etc.) to demonstrate professional products.  We modeled how teachers could used these tools to communicate concepts with their staff.

D. Use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, parents, and the larger community in order to nurture student learning.

Staff development sessions were given to model the use of telecommunications tools available to communicate and collaborate using class web pages and a staff wiki.  Teachers were taught how to design and maintain their own Web pages to support communication with the parent community.  This website can be used to share information and students' multimedia projects in order to promote student learning.  Teachers were also trained how to participate and edit a wiki page. This gave teachers the opportunity to collaborate online to share lessons in specific academic topics and review some of the research that supported our use of particular technologies in our classrooms.  Email has also been used to communicate with both staff and parents.
